C.H.R.I.S.T.M.A.S Stress Relief Tips to survive and enjoy the festive season and beyond!
Christmas can be a very fun and enjoyable time of year, but for many it’s also a very stressful time of year.
Christmas stress can come in many different forms, including self imposed pressure of trying to create the perfect Christmas and living up to others expectations, feeling lonely and missing absent loved ones, financial strains, social interactions – seeing family and relatives, some of whom you’d rather not see. Trying to please everyone and be everywhere. Many over indulge, eating and drinking too much and then feel rubbish for doing it afterwards.
All that being said Christmas can also be a wonderful, fun and magical time of year. So here are my top 9 tips to help you survive and enjoy Christmas.
C – Calm, Keep Calm it’s only Christmas! However you look at it, Christmas is only for one day, or a week if you include the whole holiday period, either way remember whether you enjoy it or not, it will soon pass by.

H – Have. Have a plan. Remember Christmas is always on the 25th December. One of the biggest stresses and strains of Christmas is time and money, so don’t leave it all to the last minute plan for it, maybe it’s too late for this Christmas, but start getting ready and organized and make next Christmas calmer and more enjoyable.
But even for this year, have a plan, how are you going to spend your time and who are you going to spend it with. How can you plan enjoyable things that you enjoy and make it more fun?
How can you start to budget and plan for next Christmas, it may come as a surprise to you if you don’t. P.S just to let you know Christmas will once again be on 25th December next year! 🙂
R – Relax. Relax and take time to enjoy some quiet time for you and enjoy some calm peaceful time in the here and the now, the present, without thinking or worrying about the past or the future. This don’t have to include time consuming activities, after all it may be a busy time for you, so it’s important to schedule in some downtime for you. This can include simple things that you enjoying doing, taking a nice bath, watching some of your favourite movies, listening to some uplifting music, going for a walk.
Top Tip – Breathe, it’s free and unlimited! Take some time to breathe with mindfulness, release and let go of stresses and strains and just relax. Simply pause for a moment become aware of your breathing and take some slow comfortable breaths in and out.
I – Identify. Identify what’s Important to you. This can really help to put it all into perspective and make it more enjoyable for you.
Often we can get caught up in the busyness of Christmas, the commercial side of it and what’s expected of us, that we forget our true meaning of Christmas. So take a step back and ask yourself – What’s the true meaning of Christmas for me?
What do you really want to enjoy about Christmas?
What fun traditions can you start?
What is your true meaning of Christmas?
Is it a religious celebration, is it a family tradition, is it time to relax with Friends and Family?
For me Christmas is for loving, sharing and giving, Christmas is a day of meaning and traditions, a special day to be shared and enjoyed with family and friends.
It may be very different for you, but identify what’s important to you and focus on that, let go of all the unnecessary aspects and stresses of Christmas and focus on what’s important to you and your loved ones.
Don’t wait for it to happen, go and make it happen, make it special for you and simply enjoy whatever makes it a good and happy time for you!
S – Say. Say NO! Let go of perfectionism, accept the things you can’t change or do and let go of all the “shoulds” and avoid any unnecessary stress.
Prioritise the 3P’s, People, Parties and Presents. Who and what is really important, don’t tire yourself out trying to be all to everyone and spread yourself too thin. Focus on what and who are important and politely say no to everything else.

T – Time. Take time for you, take time to look after yourself, take time to do things you enjoy, take time to smile and laugh, Take time to move your body, get some fresh air, Take time to look after you self and indulge in some self care.
Once you have identified what’s really important to you, then you can purposefully take time to do the things that are in alignment with what’s important to you. Notice I say take time, Christmas is a busy time for most, but for many it will also be very lonely and a quiet time, yet we all have the same 24 hours in a day, the best bit about is, we get to choose how we spend it.
Once you know what’s important to you, then you can take the time to make it happen, don’t just leave it to chance and hope it will happen, make it happen now!
M –Mindful. Be mindful, spend some time to reflect and be mindful of everything.
Eat mindfully, be aware of the food and drink you are fuelling your body with, give yourself a break and eat and drink in moderation.
Be mindful of what you are drinking and make sure you drink more water, it has so many benefits and it’s so easy to do.
Listen mindfully, this can really enhance your relationships and the way you communicate with people, most people just want a good listening to, friends, partners, children, how often do you actually give them your full undivided attention and just listen.
Rest mindfully, take time to switch off and unwind and re-charge your energy levels. Rest and good sleep is so vitally important to our stress levels, energy levels, and general wellbeing and outlook.
Choose Mindfully, be aware of the choices you are making, remember if you don’t like something change it, if you can’t change it change the way you allow yourself to react and respond to it, that you are fully in control of .
Top tip – Be mindful of your self talk, and what you focus on, is it empowering you and draining you. To help, adopt and practise the gratitude attitude, be mindful of what you’re already grateful for, what’s good in your life and what you enjoy and appreciate now. .

A –Active. Be more active, get up, move your body, stretch and be more active, and were possible get outside more and get some fresh air!
Ask yourself, how can I be more active?
Go for a walk, take the kids to the park, interact and play games with the children, play with pets, do some exercise, just be more active.
Take a few moments to think of as many different activities you can do and then do them. Go on, get off the couch, go out and move more and see how good you feel!
S – Spend. Spend time and energy making Christmas more fun. Instead of focusing on the stress and pressure, why not stop and look at how you can make it more fun. Remember we get more of what we focus on, so take the time to focus on how you want to feel and how you can make it more enjoyable.

Simply spend more time with people you enjoy being with, including yourself. Spend more time doing the things that you enjoy, spend your time and energy making Christmas special for you!
