What do you choose

Recently I was walking with my family and some friends in the woods, it was when all the bluebells were out, it was such a spectacular sight.

These were woods that we’d not visited before and on our way through the woods we often reached a crossroad, where the path forked off in different directions and we had to choose which way to go. It was really interesting watching the kids explore with excitement and curiosity, choosing which way to go, climbing over obstacles where trees had fallen and blocked the path, where the path had become overgrown, gates to climb over, there were all kinds of different obstacles. But that didn’t matter, that was all part of the fun and adventure.

This reminded me of life in lots of ways, we often reach crossroads where we have to make decisions, in life, business, sport, relationships, careers. Life is made up of lots of different decisions. But as we grow up we often lose that child like excitement and curiosity and often become afraid of making decisions because of the unknown a head. Sometimes it’s because of the fear of making mistakes and failing, sometimes it’s even the fear of success and the extra pressure and responsibility it may bring, maybe the worry of what others will think. There maybe all kinds of reasons why we often get in our own way and limit ourselves from moving forward in the direction we want to go.

So we either default to the path of least resistance, which seems easiest, or the path we are already on or, or even we stay stuck were we are rather that make any decisions.

blue bell woods crossroadsBut imagine if we approached crossroads and decisions with a more child like excitement and curiosity and just enjoy each step along the path and simply find a way around, over, under or even through any obstacle that may come up on the path a head. How much more progress could we possible make and how much more enjoyable would the adventure of life be.

Everything we do is based on decisions and choices we make. It’s not the fault of parents, past relationships, your job, your customers, external factors like the economy or the weather, you and only you are responsible for every decision you make. We cannot change the past or these external factors but we are responsible for how we react and learn from them and which step we choose to take next.

This is often the reason why so many people don’t like making decisions, because they are responsible for it, we then end up thinking and worrying and going getting in our own way by getting stuck in the “Paralysis of Analysis” and not doing anything.

But the truth is you’ll never know if you’ve made a wrong decision until you make one and if it’s wrong so what, a wrong decision doesn’t stop anyone, but indecision does. So just make a choice, commit to it, take action towards it and get going. Then you can evaluate adjust as you go along. At least then you will be making progress rather than just being carried along by the current of life!

Is it time you got out of your own way?

As Theordre Roosevelt once said, “In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”

I’ve been working with a client recently who has had some serious health problems over the last 6 months, together we have helped to reduce her anxiety/worry and improve her sleep. Unfortunately her health has taken another twist, and currently she is in a lot of pain. This is out of her control, but the one good thing is she has chosen to help herself the best she can and is still sleeping well and listening to her audio every day, this is helping to keep her calm and relaxed, and that is her choice!

I tell you his to remind you, that lots of us struggle with life, or situations in life at times, we get easily get caught up and overwhelmed with the stresses and strains of day to day life. But the reality is if you have your health, the rest you have the power and freedom of choice to change. I’m not saying it’s always easy, but it is possible!

With the recent passing of author Maya Angelou and the inspiration Stephen Sutton, I want to leave you today with two quotes I’ve recently shared on social media that sums it up best…

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.” Maya Angelou

“Make every second count, never take anything for granted, don’t be afraid to try something new – life is for living. From someone who wants more time in this world, please don’t waste yours, you’d be amazed what you can achieve when you try”.  Stephen Sutton

Is it time to make some choices, is it time for you to do things differently and make some better decisions?
Are you ready to get out of your own way and just take the next step towards what you actually want?

Now is the time, Get out of your own way, the thought is always more overwhelming than the task, so don’t wait any longer. Focus more on your desire than on doubt, imagine it, believe it, and achieve it. Go for it and you can make it happen. Action is more effective than inaction every time, so Just Do it!

But remember either way it’s your choice!
