Feeling Lost, Stressed or Stuck? 10 Mind Fitness Strategies to Reset Your Mind and Reclaim Your Energy

These simple, effective mind fitness strategies can help you de-stress, reset, and recharge your mind and get back on track.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve spoken to several people who, for various reasons, have been feeling low, stuck, overwhelmed, burnt out, or just not in a good headspace. Maybe you can relate. Life can feel heavy at times, and it’s easy to become mentally and emotionally drained.

When people ask me what they can do to shift these feelings and get out of their own head, these are the mind fitness strategies I always come back to (and personally use myself). They're simple but effective. You don’t have to use all of them at once, but it’s good to have a few tools in your mind fitness toolkit.

Some are great for a quick reset, while others are most effective when practised consistently as part of your daily life. Mind fitness, much like physical fitness, works best when it’s proactive rather than just reactive. But if you’re feeling low right now, these can give you a genuine lift.

I’ve created YouTube videos for most of these and will link them throughout the post so you can explore further.

1. Look Up: Shift Your Focus and Get Out of Your Own Head

When you're feeling stuck, your mind can spiral inwards. One of the simplest ways to break that loop is to physically look up. It might sound basic, but looking above your eye line can signal your mind to stop overthinking. Step outside, look at the sky, or the tops of trees and buildings, and reconnect with a wider perspective. It helps you interrupt the “stuck” pattern and return to the present moment.

2. Come to Your Senses: The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique

Mindfulness is a powerful way to reduce stress and anchor yourself in the here and now. One of my favourite grounding techniques is the 5-4-3-2-1 method:

  • 🖼️ 5 things you can see (look above eye level)
  • 🔊 4 things you can hear
  • ✋ 3 things you can feel
  • 👃 2 things you can smell
  • 👅 1 thing you can taste

This method brings your awareness into your senses and helps you calm the nervous system. It’s incredibly effective, especially when you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed.

3. Breathe Deeply: Reset and Regulate Your Nervous System

When we’re feeling low or anxious, our breathing often becomes shallow, which can keep us stuck in a stress response. Breathwork is a quick way to reset. You could try:

  • Box breathing: Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4 (repeat)
  • Focused circular breathing: In and out for the same length, pace, and duration
  • Or simply take a few slow, deep breaths, focusing on each inhale and exhale

4. Get Moving: Let Your Body Lead the Way

You don’t need to do an intense workout. Just move your body. Stretch, go for a walk, dance in your kitchen, or do a few star jumps. Anything that shakes up your energy will help.

Movement boosts clarity and releases endorphins, your body’s natural mood enhancers. It supports both physical and mental health, and is one of the fastest ways to lift your mood and shift your state of mind.

5. Practice Gratitude: Shift the Lens of Your Mind

When you’re feeling low, it’s easy to focus on what’s not working. Gratitude helps you redirect your attention to what is working. It doesn’t have to be anything grand. Start with:

  • A warm cup of tea
  • A message from a friend
  • The fact that you’re able to access and read this

Gratitude trains your mind to focus on the good things, even in challenging times. Try writing down three things you’re grateful for each day. Over time, it can shift your mindset completely.

6. Mind Your Language: Speak Kindly to Yourself

Your inner dialogue holds power. When you’re already feeling low, self-criticism only drags you down further. Pay attention to how you’re speaking to yourself. Would you say those things to someone you care about?

Replace the harsh inner voice with compassion. Use affirmations, gentle self-reminders, or simply say, “I’m doing the best I can today.” Kindness builds resilience and helps restore your self-trust.

7. Focus on What You Want (Not What You Fear)

Your mind is a bit like a television or radio. Sometimes we leave it running on a negative channel without even realising. Take a moment to change that internal channel.

Visualise something positive:

  • A goal you’re working towards
  • A place (real or imagined) that brings you peace
  • A memory where you felt happy or strong

Your focus is a powerful tool. Direct it towards what uplifts and energises you, rather than what weighs you down.

8. Take Action: Small Wins Create Big Shifts

When you feel stuck, don’t wait for motivation. Action brings clarity and energy. Even a small forward step can build momentum.

What’s one thing you could do right now that moves you in the right direction? Send that message. Tidy one corner. Go outside. Small actions lead to progress, and progress builds confidence.

9. Journal It Out: Clear the Noise and Track Your Growth

Journaling is a great way to reset your mindset and clear your mental clutter. It allows you to reflect, track your progress, and process what’s going on beneath the surface.

You don’t need to write for ages. Just five minutes of free writing can offer a surprising amount of insight. Ask yourself:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What do I need?
  • What’s one thing I’m proud of today?

10. Rest Your Mind: Guided Meditation, Mind Mastery and Self-Hypnosis

Just like your body needs rest, your mind needs space to reset, recharge, and re-energise. Meditation, self-hypnosis, and guided audio tools are powerful ways to calm mental noise, reduce stress, and bring you back to centre.

Giving yourself even a few minutes to pause, breathe, and tune in can make a huge difference, especially on those days when you're feeling drained, overwhelmed, or stuck in overthinking.

It’s often much easier to settle the mind when you’re being gently guided, particularly when your energy is low or your nervous system is under pressure. That’s where my Mind Mastery audio sessions come in.

🎧 I’ve created a collection of free, easy-to-follow mindset meditations on my YouTube channel, all under 10 minutes – perfect for a quick mental refresh wherever you are.

Give yourself permission to pause. Your mind will thank you for it.

Build a Lifestyle of Mind Fitness

These strategies aren’t just for the difficult days, although they are especially useful then. They are practices you can build into your daily routine so that when life gets challenging, you’re more grounded, resilient, and ready.

Before diving into any of these techniques, it’s worth checking that the basics are covered:

✅ Are you getting enough sleep?
✅ Are you staying hydrated?
✅ Are you eating foods that truly nourish your body and brain?

It also helps to take a moment and assess what’s really going on. Sometimes we’re fully aware of the stress we’re under. Other times, we’re operating on autopilot and haven’t acknowledged that we may be experiencing emotional leaks in areas such as relationships, work or business, our mindset, or finances.

🔍 Take a moment to check in:

  • Is anything out of balance?
  • Are you holding onto stress or tension without realising?
  • What’s been quietly draining your energy?

And if everything seems fine, that’s brilliant. Let this serve as a reminder to maintain what’s working. Keep these mind fitness tools close so you're prepared for whatever comes next.

If something does feel off, don’t panic. Instead of dwelling on the problem, ask yourself:

“What can I do today to positively impact this situation?”

Use these strategies not just to manage, but to create meaningful change, support your wellbeing, and move back into alignment with the version of yourself you want to live from.

Your Quick Mindset Reset Starts Now

Before you scroll away, give yourself a moment.

Pick just one of the strategies above – whichever one feels most doable right now. Maybe it’s taking a few deep breaths, stepping outside for a walk, or writing down three things you’re grateful for.

Do it now, even if it’s only for 2 minutes. Small actions shift your state faster than you think.

👉 Let this be your first step towards clarity, calm, and feeling more like you again.

You can do it.

All the best

Bonus Strategy:

11 Be Mindful of What You’re Affirming

Every thought you repeat to yourself is an affirmation, whether you realise it or not. So the question is, what are you affirming each day?

Are you feeding your mind with thoughts like “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t do this”? Or are you choosing beliefs that support and empower you?

Affirmations are a simple but powerful way to shift your internal dialogue. Choose words that align with how you want to feel or who you’re becoming.

“I am” statements like:

  • “I am doing my best, and that is enough.”

  • “I am grounded, capable, and clear.”

  • “I trust myself to handle what comes.”

Say them out loud. Write them down. Stick them on your mirror, put them on your phones screensaver.

This is another way to train your mind and change how you think and feel.
Remember—your thoughts (the words you use) lead to your feelings, and your feelings drive your actions. The more intentional you are with your inner language, the more empowered and aligned your outer world becomes.

Your words shape your reality – make them count.
