Does Goal Setting Really Work? The Truth About Achieving Success

Do You Set Goals?

The other day, I was out for a walk with a friend who told me he no longer sets goals. His reason? In summary he found them de-motivating, often leaving him feeling unfulfilled and constantly chasing the next achievement without ever feeling satisfied.

It was an interesting perspective, but one I see often. Many people feel this way because they approach goal setting in a way that sets them up for frustration, not fulfilment.

This conversation reminded me of a powerful quote:
“It’s not the goal itself, but what the goal makes of you.”

Goal setting isn’t just about achieving a target, it’s about creating clarity, aligning your mindset, and enjoying the journey.

Why Goal Setting Often Feels Frustrating

One reason goal setting can feel unfulfilling is that people treat it like a checklist. They focus only on the end result, ignoring the transformation that happens along the way.

Here’s why many goals fail to stick:
You don’t know where you’re going. If you don’t get clear about your destination, it’s like setting out on a journey without a map. Imagine turning up at the airport without deciding where you’re going or what to pack – chaos, right?
You focus on what you don’t want. Most of us subconsciously programme our minds to focus on avoiding what we fear, rather than moving towards what we desire. This creates internal resistance.
The journey is overlooked. Without embracing the process, achieving a goal often feels empty, leading to old habits creeping back in.

Your Inner GPS: Programming for Success

Setting goals and aligning your mindset is like programming your inner GPS. Just as you wouldn’t start a journey without knowing where you’re headed, you need a clear vision for your life.

Yet, most of us unknowingly set our internal GPS for what we don’t want. We focus on our fears, frustrations, and failures – and then wonder why nothing changes.

To create real change, you need to:
– Decide on your destination (your goal).
– Plan your route (your strategy).
– Align your mindset so you take action consistently.

As Earl Nightingale said,
“People with goals succeed because they know where they're going.”

My Top Tips for Setting Goals That Stick

To set and achieve goals in a way that feels fulfilling and sustainable, I use two simple frameworks: my 3W Framework and my Believe + Action = Achieve mindset method. Here’s how they work:

1. Get Clear Using the 3W Framework

If you want to achieve your goals, clarity is key. Use this framework to programme your mind for success:

WHERE: Be honest about your starting point. Where are you right now? Understanding your current situation gives you the foundation to plan effectively.
WHAT: Decide what you actually want. Be specific, and focus on a goal that excites and inspires you -not one based on fear or avoidance.
WHY: Connect to the deeper reason for your goal. Why is this important to you? Your why will keep you moving forward when life happens, or motivation wanes.

2. Believe in Your Ability to Succeed

A lack of belief is one of the biggest obstacles to achieving goals. Without self-belief, you’ll subconsciously sabotage your efforts.

This is where my Believe + Action = Achieve mindset method comes in:
Believe: Cultivate self-belief that you can achieve your goal and that you are enough. Remember, limiting beliefs create resistance.
Action: Take consistent, aligned action every day. Goals don’t come to fruition without action.
Achieve: When belief and action align, achievement becomes inevitable.

As Napoleon Hill wisely said:
“You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.”

3. Enjoy the Journey

We often focus so much on the destination that we forget to enjoy the process. But the truth is, success isn’t just about reaching the finish line – it’s about who you become along the way.

Jim Rohn put it beautifully:
“The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them.”

To ensure your journey is rewarding:
Build systems and habits that support your progress. As James Clear said:  “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
Celebrate small wins along the way. Progress, no matter how small, is worth acknowledging.
Reframe setbacks as lessons. When things don’t go as planned, adjust your approach rather than abandoning the goal.

4. Align Your Strategy and Mindset

Sometimes, achieving a goal feels hard because there’s a misalignment between your strategy and your mindset.

If you’re not making progress, ask yourself:
– Is this a strategy problem (outer work)?
– Or is this a mindset problem (inner work)?

When you align both, you’ll find it easier to take consistent, purposeful action to make it happen.

Why Goals Matter

Goals give your life direction. Without them, you risk running aimlessly through life, like playing a football match without knowing where the goalposts are.

As Bill Copeland said:
“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.”

Goals also inspire you to grow. Andrew Carnegie summed it up perfectly:
“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes.” – how good does that sound?

Take Action Today

If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to set your goals, remember this: The time will never be ‘just right.’

Napoleon Hill said it best:
“Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.

A Final Thought

Setting goals is more than creating a to-do list – it’s about programming your inner GPS for a life you desire. Goals act as the bridge that transforms you from your current reality to your desired reality, guiding your growth and progress every step of the way. When you align your goals with your why, believe in your ability to achieve them, and take consistent action, you unlock a your next level mindset that transforms every aspect of your life.

So, where do you want to go next? More importantly, who will you become to make it happen?

Remember: A year from now, you’ll wish you had started today.

Now go make it happen!

All the best
