Stop Focusing on What You Don’t Want: Who Do You Want to Become in 2026?

Why clarity of identity – not more goals – is the key to a successful year

As the year comes to a close, a familiar pattern starts to appear.

People rush to set goals.
They write long lists.
They promise themselves “next year will be different.”

And yet…
By February, many of those plans have quietly fallen apart.

Not because people lack motivation.
Not because they don’t want it badly enough.

But because they skipped the most important step.

They never decided who they’re becoming.

Why Most Goals Fail Before February

Most people approach a new year focused on outcomes:

  • what they want to stop

  • what they want to avoid

  • what they don’t want to feel anymore

Less stress.
Less overwhelm.
Less pressure.
Less frustration.

That might feel logical – but it’s a problem.

Your mind doesn’t move away from something clearly.
It moves towards a destination.

If you don’t give it one, it defaults back to what’s familiar.

That’s why vague goals collapse under pressure.

The Shift That Changes Everything: Identity Before Action

Instead of asking “What do I want to do next year?”
Ask a far more powerful question:

Who do I want to become?

Because when identity is clear:

  • habits follow

  • actions align

  • consistency becomes easier

  • decisions feel simpler

This isn’t about doing more.

It’s about deciding who you are – and letting your actions follow.

The Mindset Reset: Stop Focusing on What You Don’t Want

Here’s a simple but profound reset.

Most people spend far too much time rehearsing:

  • what they don’t want

  • what they’re tired of

  • what they hope won’t happen again

But your mind doesn’t respond to complaints.
It responds to direction.

So instead of reinforcing what you’re done with, consciously shift your focus to what you’re moving towards.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want more of in my life next year?

  • How do I want to feel on a daily basis?

  • What version of me is required for that to happen?

This single shift can dramatically change your energy and clarity.

Choose a Guiding Word or Theme for Your Year

One of the most effective tools I use personally – and with clients – is choosing a guiding word or theme for the year ahead.

Not a goal.
Not a to-do list.

A North Star your inner compass.

Examples:

  • Calm

  • Focus

  • Consistency

  • Alignment

  • Confidence

  • Expansion

  • Simplicity

This word becomes a filter.

When life gets busy (and it will), you ask:

Does this align with the year I’m choosing to live?

It helps you reset, realign, and refocus – without pressure.

Align Your Mindset, Identity, and Actions

Real change happens when these three align:

Mindset

What you believe is possible for you.

Identity

Who you see yourself as becoming.

Action

What you do consistently – even when motivation dips.

When these are out of sync, progress feels hard.
When they align, momentum feels natural.

This is why willpower isn’t the answer.
Clarity is.

The Question That Changes Everything

Here’s the key reflection from the video:

“This time next year, I am…”

Finish that sentence honestly.

Not what you hope to be.
Not what you should be.

What you’re choosing.

Because once that identity is clear, your mind starts looking for ways to make it real.

Final Thought: Decide First, Then Act

You don’t need to do more.
You don’t need to force motivation.
You don’t need to overhaul everything.

You need to decide who you’re becoming – and let your actions catch up.

When the mind knows where it’s going, it works with you instead of against you.
